25 Days - Creating Christmas Traditions

Every family has their own holiday traditions. If you feel like bringing a bit more festiveness into your home this year, check out our ideas for a few new holiday traditions.

Enjoy the Christmas lights. Drive around your neighborhood (while listening to Christmas tunes) and admire your neighbors' Christmas décor. Be sure to take some cocoa or hot apple cider along as well. If you have children, bundle them up in their jammies and go out just before bedtime.

Have Cookie Exchange. Ask each guest to bring several dozen cookies, (some for eating and some for exchanging). Give each guest a festive tin or bag to bring home all of their treats.

Select (or make) a special ornament that represents the year. Did you take cooking classes this year? How about a cooking themed ornament? Did your son's baseball team make it to All Stars this year? A baseball ornament would be perfect!

Help a family in need. Many charities will provide you with information about a family that needs a little extra help this time of year. Gather food items and presents for this family, taking care to select a gift for each family member.

Have a movie night. Watch a holiday classic, like "It's a Wonderful Life" or "The Christmas Story". If you have a fireplace, build a fire. A festive drink will make things even cozier!

Read a special book. Growing up, my mom always read "'Twas the Night Before Christmas" to us on Christmas Eve, just before it was time to go to bed. We would read the same book every year. (It happened to be the same book that her mom read to her when she was a child). We all looked forward to this special tradition. In fact, just a few years ago, we all gathered around and made her do it again. This time, I did not sit on her lap.

What special traditions do you have for the holiday season?
