Anyone Up For Some Cake Truffles?

For my dear Mother's birthday, I couldn't resist baking up something irresistible. Anyone who has heard of Bakerella, knows about her delicious Cake Pops. She's a genius! I do mine a little differently, but always check her site for great ideas and inspiration. I really don't know how she comes up with such creative creations!

I decided to make my cake truffles and present them to my mom as if they were a box of candy.

Yummy!

First, I baked a Devil's Food Cake to use as the base of my "candy box".  Then, I cut the cake into the size I wanted and leveled it off. Once it was perfect, I rolled red fondant and attached it to the side of the cake to look like the sides of a box. I attached the fondant with chocolate frosting.

After my cake truffles were complete, I plopped each one into a tiny baking cup and set them into the "box".

I made them in all different shapes and with different decorations so that they would look like a delicious box of candy. Round truffles, square truffles, rectangular truffles, sprinkles, chocolate swirls, fondant dots . . . a little bit of everything.

And of course, I completed the box with a bow.

Happy Birthday, Mom!

  3. That's so cute. I've never worked with fondant but a friend made me the most beautiful birthday cake last year that was covered with a layer of fondant and I've wanted to try it ever since. Is it difficult to work with?

  4. Yummmmmmy!!!! I just recently started watching some shows like Cake Boss and Cupcake Wars. I keep thinking "I could do that" but honestly my baking skills are no where up to par! This looks fantastic!!!

  5. Karen, I bought the colored, ready to use fondant, so it wasn't that tough. I don't think I have the patience to cover a whole cake with it though!
